BSU opens its first virtual exhibition on SorbonNum! This is a digital reflection of the Carnet des sciences en Terre du Milieu [Middle-earth Science Notebook] exhibition, which is currently on display in the BCPR library (Pierre and Marie Curie campus) until 17 December. The virtual exhibition aims to allow Internet users to discover its contents without having to travel. Based on an adapted version of the texts, enriched with quotations from Tolkien's works, as well as high-resolution photographs of the objects on display, the exhibition reveals the scientific roots of the author's work. Based on ten or so themes dealt with in the book Tolkien et les sciences [Tolkein and the Sciences] (ed. Belin), this exhibition, illustrated with specimens from Sorbonne University's heritage collections, weaves together the imaginary and the real, legend and scientific reality, and shows how the world imagined by Tolkien can be reread with insights from numerous disciplines, from linguistics to mineralogy, from botany to archaeology.
